Hot Air Balloons

That guy I linked to yesterday, Derrick Story, also has his own YouTube channel. Check out this one video from there of balloons at the 2011 Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic.

Reminds me of this event in the Philippines which I haven't ever attended! :(

Great photography on really cool photo sharing website

Check out 500px.com, which was mentioned on that podcast I mentioned earlier, which also featured photographer Derrick Story who runs his own aptly-named podcast, The Digital Story.

Frederick van Johnson, Photographer

Learned about this guy on TWiT Photo, the "netcast" from TWiT.tv, on an episode where they also talk about digital vs. film photography. Check out his photo gallery and his similarly-named (but started earlier) podcast This Week in Photo. He was formerly a combat photo journalist while in the US military, formerly with Apple helping in the early development of iPhoto, with Adobe working on Lightroom, and with Yahoo! working on some of their content portals.

On that TWiT photo episode I mentioned there was also another photographer guest, as well as a really cool online photograph-related service. I will link to them on the next couple of RAW articles. Stay tuned. :-D

IKEA will soon launch their own digital camera.

A digital disposable camera, that is. It's called "KNÄPPA," made of cardboard, and powered by two AAA batteries which you can buy from IKEA as well (because everyone now has their own battery brand).  It can hold up to around 40 photos, and you can transfer those photos to your computer using the built-in USB plug. Neat. And according to The 404 Podcast which I regularly listen to, and as you yourself might digest from the video below, the camera has a "manual zoom" function, while together with one of this type of IKEA product you can access the image stabilization function. They encourage you to use it to take photos of IKEA furniture in your home and share on their website. Check out an article about it with lots of nice photos at this link, which also features the very well made video shown below. By now, this should be on sale already in IKEA stores worldwide. As of the time of composition of this post (3 weeks earlier), there is no pricing information yet.

The sun is going to explode!

In about 6 billion years, that is. This is a nice, must-read article for the non-scientists (or non-astrophysicists) in all of us; i.e. what to tell our kids when they learn in school (or from somewhere else) that the sun is going to explode and that all life as we know it will disappear. Did I say it's a must-read? Please read it! http://j.gs/v2O.

While you're at it, check out the photo of the astrophysicist-author to the left of the article itself. And watch the video (also shown here) of the Crab Nebula!

Price tags in the wrong places

Some of these are intentional and are not that funny, but some of them are! Check them out on the Funcage blog: http://j.gs/v1W. WARNING: I would rate some of the images on that link as PG-18.

This link always appears in Google search results (in English)

I searched for probably a rather obscure, very long search term (in English) on Google, and for some reason this "website" came up and it contains nothing at all relevant, seemingly all garbage:

http://web.mit.edu/adamrose/Public/googlelist

Apparently it's a text file of tons of (English) keywords and only keywords, such that its file size is close to 60 Megabytes already. No wonder. So whenever you search for something on Google, (and until the website owner decides to delete it,) this link will probably crop up in the results list, usually near the end since it doesn't contain actual comprehensible phrases. It's all just words.

Actually I have had this idea before, but I never got around to making it. Now, if only there's a way to monetize that page...

WARNING: Loading a 60 Megabyte webpage takes time and will demand a lot of your computer's resources!

Books Every Geek Should Read to Their Kids

Check out the article on GeekDad at Wired.com. The author actually put 67 books in his list and suggests to read those books until your child turns 10. Just click the "Next" link to the right of the first book's cover image to see the next book, and so on. It's a "cute" article but I personally won't buy all those 67 books for my kids. Gifts are very much welcome, though, and I would certainly read those to my kid/s. :-D  Hand-me-downs are also okay.

Pregnancy Time Lapse

Check out this cool, very well-made time lapse video through a woman's pregnancy.

Actually there's a lot of these on YouTube, but the video featured here is probably the best one among them. It's also the top search result on YouTube.

This is probably second best: http://j.gs/uIu.
This is probably the very first one, from 2008, and so now it is almost 4 years old: http://j.gs/uIv.
And this is one of the similarly popular ones on YouTube: http://j.gs/uIx.

For more, just search YouTube for "time lapse pregnancy," or just click this link: http://j.gs/uIn.

P.S. Links shown above will display an ad that you can skip after 5 seconds, by pressing the "Skip Ad" button on the upper right.

A comparison of 13 different cloud sync services (like Dropbox)

Check it out from this link: http://j.gs/txO. If you're not yet syncing through the cloud, you should try the industry leader, Dropbox, now. But you know, I like that I have 7Gb free on Microsoft's SkyDrive, and access to them via the web, iPhone/iPad, Android, Mac, and Windows. In fact, for some reason, SkyDrive gave me 25Gb free. Now that's called taking the shortest route to a man's heart; i.e. through his tech stomach.

"100 Things I Have Learned About Photography"

Read this article, "100 Things I Have Learned About Photography" on Apartment Therapy, a website with the goal of "helping people make their homes more beautiful, organized and healthy by connecting them to a wealth of resources, ideas and community online." Interesting. Even though I'll probably never really become a photographer. Hehe. And that is, even if I might own a "professional" camera in the future. But yeah, like I always say, point-and-shoots are still cameras and you can still be a photographer even with just a point-and-shoot. For more on photography basics, lifehacker.com has a free, comprehensive guide by which you can access through this link: http://j.gs/twX.

So you're a band/group and you have a band/group page with a login and password you share with your bandmates...

This funny "commercial" introducing (the new) Official.fm presents a funny take on the above-mentioned dilemma that you might have:

For more on Official.fm (which is for bands, artists), check out this Vimeo:

Here's another online band/artist collaboration service this time focused on music creation more than promotion, being introduced by no other than LL Cool J himself:

If you don't know LL Cool J, here's his one-hit wonder and one of my all-time favorite rap songs:

The yo-yo trick you have never seen before.

Check this video out. I found out about this thru The 404 Podcast on CNET TV. Amazing, right? Anyways, check out this talk he gave at TEDxTalks Tokyo to learn a little bit more about his story:

And you can check out his shows and more on his official website, officeblack.com, and there are a few more videos of his performances on his YouTube channel on http://youtube.com/officeblack. He even has set-up "Yo-yo Bar," a bar/restaurant in Japan where patrons can partake in lessons and watch performances and eat and drink and socialize at the same time.  Check out the website on yoyobar.jp. They have a video/slideshow of the place on his YouTube channel as well.

Is this the next big sci-fi blockbuster?

I'm talking about Prometheus, showing on cinemas around the world, June 1st, except in the US and Canada, where it will premiere on June 8th. Why? The thinking, I think, is to prevent/reduce piracy. Let's see the numbers. It's like The Avengers, which premiered internationally on April 11th, and only on May 4th in the US.

Doesn't seem like a kid-friendly sci-fi flick, though, as much as the Star Wars, Star Trek, or The Matrix movies were. Check out the international launch trailer below.

Resignation "Letter" to Microsoft (Bye, Bye Excel and I)

Talk about the future. Is this the future of resignation letters? Well, no, it will depend on what industry you're in. Civil engineering? Won't work. Anyway, like how some creatives might have "video resumes," here's a resignation video one Microsoft employee (and soon to be a former Microsoft employee) created. I guess it's only appropriate to use a digital medium for a tech company. And if you're just one of the engineers. Won't probably work if you're middle to top management. Apparently she's known in the Excel group within Microsoft as a singer; check out one of her other videos below:
