Yet another year in review for 2011 video

Yahoo! 2011 Year In Review - Video: Inspiring Moments of 2011

Happy 2011

Thank you to all of you who greeted us a Happy New Year last year. 2011 was a happy year indeed. A great one, even.

To remember what mattered on the global stage this 2011, check out Google Zeitgeist. They have a list of the top 10 globally most searched topics of 2011, and from the "Top 10 Lists" tab on the top, you'll also find the top 10s for each country in 6 continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania), each list arranged according to a number of categories (e.g. Fastest Rising, Fastest Falling, People, Entertainment, Sports, Music, Consumer Electronics, Food, Drinks, etc.).

And don't forget to check out the video linked on the lower left of the Home tab. Great song selection as well.

We always thought 2010 was a great year, especially for us. While that we still consider true, 2011 is likewise a memorable one. To us, this only goes to show that if we only have true, unwavering faith, each new year only becomes better.

With that, we would like to wish all of you a Happy 2012 filled with much, much more blessings!

It's summer!

In the Souther Hemisphere, that is. Watch this video entitled "Hawaiian Summer" on Vimeo. Not feeling like summer in your part of the world? Watch it still! You will feel the heat in this video. Ermm, no, not that kind of heat. :D

Whoa!

I first saw this guy play live as the opening number for the Crunchies 2010 award show, and wow, talk about talent! This is his official music video for the same song:

But before checking the above video out, it's better to see him perform live!

Read more about him at Wikipedia and at his own website. Oh and go look for his America's Got Talent performance of "Sweet Home Alabama" on YouTube!

Who needs Photo Booth-like effects?

Just gather a bunch of dogs and cats, douse them in water, watch them shake the water off, and then capture the moment with your high shutter speed camera. The result is this photo album called Shake, by Carli Davidson.

(Philippines) Learn about money and investing

Visit the Pesos And Sense YouTube Channel. Pesos and Sense is apparently a show produced for GMA? It is hosted by someone who works for Citiseconline. I highly recommend Citiseconline. But like money and many things we have today, it is only a tool; you have to know how to use it. Once you know enough how to use it, it can potentially provide you with another income stream. Good luck!

Share your music playlists and listen to free streaming music online

Check it out. The service is called MixPod.

How big is your phone?

Visit Phone-Size.com, adjust the screen type (or aspect ratio; usually 4:3 for regular monitors and 16:10 for most wide screen monitors), screen size, and offset, so that your phone displays in the actual size, then select other phones to compare. While you're at it, try to imagine how the other phones would feel in your hand.

Voicing a Led Zeppelin classic

Remember that sound effects officer from Police Academy? Anyways, read the short write-up then watch the must-see video on this blog post entitled "Michael Winslow gets the Led out" from the kottke.org blog.

October 14 is for Steve

October 14 is the initial global launch of Apple's latest product, the iPhone 4S. I always thought, "4S" must have meant "4 Steve."

Anyway, some big fans of Steve Jobs proposed (even before the big, sad news) that October 14 should become a day for Steve, i.e. Steve Jobs Day. They are encouraging fans of Steve Jobs to wear at least a black mock turtleneck shirt and post their photos on FB or Twitter (e.g. as profile pics) and take part in discussions online as well. I really hope I can find a black mock turtleneck shirt before October 14. But since I don't have billions in the bank like him, I probably will not settle for a St. Croix.

So long, Steve. Rest in peace.

Krump 360

Watch first the Behind the Scenes video on the 360 Project. “The 360 Project is an exploration into the crossroads of photography and motion pictures. It is a study of peak dance movements, captured simultaneously by 48 cameras aligned in a circle.” Then watch their two finished products: Krump 360, and Ballet 360. Thanks to my buddy Saj for the links. Yeah, it's the first time I encountered "Krumping," too. :-D

That Isn't Art

People post ridiculous "art" to Tumblr. These pieces frequently make it into Popular. Garrett Murray reblogs them in That Isn't Art and call them out for being stupid. Sub City New York and Paris

This is from LikeCool.com, probably the #1 site in the same blogspace as RAW. You heard that right, they're competition. Nah. But they're really cool, I like them a lot. And you will, too, I'm sure. Anyways, the videos about Sub City New York and Paris "are two short films about that moment in New York and Paris when you emerge from the subway and find yourself in a new and sometimes unexpected world." Check these Vimeos out.

[puzzles] The Google Puzzle

I never heard of this one before. Have you? Check it out at TheGooglePuzzle.com. Apparently it's Japanese-made and so it's available in English or in Japanese. I also learned about this one through an online ad in Japanese. Check it out, it's free. Works best with the Chrome Browser though.

Submarine Cable Map!

This is cool. You can see a map of submarine cables that connect computers across nations across large bodies of water. Check it out at SubmarineCableMap.com. As my friend Rad said, "this is the Internet."

[Limited Time] Free Game Download!

This is for real guys. If you haven't heard about Portal (and Portal 2) yet, watch this video trailer/teaser. FYI, Portal was released in 2007. It's that old and yet you probably haven't heard of it because it costs $20 usually - I only heard about it this year as well and I'm only for free games. Basically it's one of the most innovative games in recent years.

Don't tell me this ain't cool...

Watch this video on YouTube and if you want more, go check out the whole collection of videos on their channel. Of course, there are always those "suggested" links to the right. :D

Ever heard of Dynamo?

He's 10 years younger than David Blaine, and he's more into hip-hop. Watch his whoa-inducing magic tricks at his YouTube channel, but better yet, check out his blog (as of today, it's not been updated since Jan 2011 though).

More whoa!

Don't worry. You're not the only one in awe. Watch the "Impossible Magic Trick" video on http://youtu.be/-Ft0RjJmTSo. You might have seen it before already, though.

This is cool! Can you do this?

Watch the video first: http://youtu.be/WPw-b0KXENE. If you wanna know how to do it yourself, check out this second video: http://youtu.be/uxZphm_DxIE.

UBF

That's "Useless But Fun." Check out this experiment called "Google Gravity." It's Google search - that really works! - but with gravity. Try doing a search. Try also moving the window around. I haven't yet tried it in a mobile browser or a computer with accelerometers though!

The reason behind the changes in Star Wars

The Star Wars' two trilogies have been released on blu-ray (i.e. the medium that's supposedly better than DVD, which replaced the CD, which replaced cassettes, and so on). Star Wars fanatics notice slight changes that anger them. Why did George Lucas make those changes? Watch the "George Lucas Strikes Back" {HD Trailer} on YouTube. :-D

The (New) Robot Dance

No, it doesn't have to be robotty. Anyway, you haven't seen what robots are capable of (in terms of dancing) until you have watched Keepon. His/her/its first dance video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g-yrjh58ms. But his first real music video is to the tune of Spoon's "Don't You Evah". Hear more from one of its inventors on today's episode of the CNET Crave Podcast.

Infographics are cool

Visual.ly is a website about Infographics & Visualizations. From there you can create, share, and explore a ton of infographics. One of the easier ones to use and create an infographic out of, off the bat, is the Twitterizer. Here's mine, compared vis-a-vis Conan O'Brien's Twitter stats: http://bit.ly/rqCIbR. And, before I show you this another interesting infographic, let me ask you a question. Are you using Yahoo! or Gmail or something else (what?) for your e-mail? Okay, check this out: http://tinyurl.com/3brvo92.

Run Windows apps on Mac or Linux

No Windows license required (unlike Bootcamp, VMWare Fusion, or Parallels)! Not all apps are supported yet so go try the app first - it's called CrossOver. Take note that they have two versions, one for general purpose Windows apps, the other for Windows games (usually the full screen ones); and they have a bundle (both versions) option as well.

More High Wow-Factor Videos

http://vimeo.com/877053 - This one is "A short love story in stop motion" by Carlos Lascano.
http://vimeo.com/rickmereki - Rick Mereki has 3 very interesting, very innovative, very creative videos (titled "MOVE," "LEARN," and "EAT")
http://vimeo.com/26877221 - "Gulp," the world's largest stop-motion animation shot on a Nokia N8. By Nokia, of course. Talk about how money can buy you things. The making of "Gulp" is shown in this video: http://vimeo.com/27019750.

"Unthink" vs Facebook and Google+

Apparently there's yet another social networking player, aside from Facebook and Google+, and Twitter if you didn't think it was one (it certainly doesn't earn as much as FB and G+), although Google+ and this new one don't consider themselves social networking services, the former calling itself an "identity service" - duh - and the latter being a "social revolution".

Cart Bikes and other cool stuff

I first saw this "Cart Bike" idea - which is cool but dangerous, by the way, mostly because of the small wheels on the cart part. Then, wait, the host website (www.instructables.com) hosts a lot of cool as well! Check it out.

Technology is Social

Check this "Google Map Maker" out. Apparently it's Google Maps / Google Earth users from around the world contributing information to update Google Maps and Google Earth - in almost real time! Discover new places around the world, while you're at it. Also, notice the time zones of the currently being updated maps.

Get ready for Lorks

Just as when radio aficionados hated the TV when it came out, the buy-CDs-only music industry hated and still hate online music downloads or streaming, acoustic instrumentalists hated electric guitars and rock, the traditional musicians of old will hate these "Laptop Orchestras" or Lorks as well. Read about them at ArsTechnica.

It's half a year away from Valentine's, sure. Watch these videos now, anyway:

Beat the Boot

This online game from Google, Beat the Boot, is so cool. "A Chromebook boots in 8 seconds. How much can you finish during that time?" And so you try your hand at 5 different games, with 8 second time limits for each game. Warning: This might work on the Google Chrome Browser only. Warning: The music is so cool as well!!!

Get apps for your browser!

Visit the Conduit App Marketplace for a collection of links to, errrr... I meant web apps like games, productivity suites, social networking, utilities, and more that you can access from your browser. Is this for people who can't just type www.facebook.com and want to click on an icon instead? Maybe it is! Or maybe not. :D In fairness, there are true web apps out there; i.e. made for the web, and even for the mobile web. Conduit works for all major browsers. If you're on Chrome, of course you already know about the Chrome Web Store. Don't forget to search for Angry Birds and be "in." :D

Conan O'Brien's Commencement Address

I've previously linked to Steve Jobs' Stanford commencement address. Loved that. Loved Conan O'Brien's Dartmouth one as well.

Stay hungry, stay foolish. It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique. Work hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen. Stay hungry, stay foolish.

How we treat our computers; from sticky comics

Yeah, yeah, call me an Apple fanboy. But for some reason, you know I was able to try a Macintosh before I ever tried Windows. And you know, using the Windows PC felt comfortable, easy, familiar. Then again, I don't know if this funny comic glorifies Macs over "everyone else" or the other way around. Read the comic in this link. While you're at it, why don't you see more cool stuff at stickycomics.com.

MeBands on YouTube

One-man bands. Very cool. But a lot of effort. Show some appreciation for these 5 performances by 2 guys on the 1 and only YouTube: 5 4 3 2 1. Personally and music-wise, I like #4 and #5 best. I'm "Motown" like that. :D

"Exclusive iPhone 5 video" revealed

I would also call it the "what about all the hungry children in the world?" video.

a Tale of Three Tables

That are Totally Terrific. View the Videos: One, Two, Three. Personally, I like Three the most as a concept. Two I think is too heavy and therefore not really very useful. One is cool but... why buy??? Then again, I probably won't buy any of these. :-D

The Sims. Such a great game.

But have you ever tried something like this?

Vibration. See the unseen.

And now, dogs. :D

Here, one corgi dog can't seem to figure out that he can just walk through the door but instead waits for it to open before he walks through.

May the Vorce Ve Width You

A Volkswagen commercial.

Startups

Some tech startup people tend to try to emulate Mark Zuckerberg in every aspect, thinking they could be the next Facebook. What people misunderstand is that Facebook and other success stories, are exceptions to the rule (or so I read from somewhere). For the lowdown on what really happens to startups, check out this infographic.

Sagada, one of Asia's top 5 most overlooked cities

Read this travel article on Yahoo! Philippines. I wonder if the author is Filipino. Marinduque, another lesser known Philippine tourist destination even to most Filipinos, is also on this "Asia's future tourist hotspots" list on CNN Go.

The future is coming.

Duh. Anyway, if you haven't heard about Lytro, go visit their website to see samples of what you can do with photos using the Light Field camera - which might just be the future of photography. Basically, with one shot, more information is captured, and then you can adjust the focus after taking the photo. No more adjusting the focus before taking the photo. Just snap, snap, snap. And capture all the important memories. Wuh-how.

Super funny!

And now for another dose of "viral" videos.

Watch this collection of videos that millions have watched and shared on the internet, from Tom Hanks dancing on an en Español US weather report, to US President Barrack Obama showing his baby whispering skills, to a cat that was barking like a dog... until he was caught by his owner and so he went back to meowing... Yes, people. More cat videos! And other animals', too.

By the way. No virii/viruses here, folks. If you don't know what a "viral video" is, you probably haven't visited Wikipedia, ever. So go there first before you watch the video.

What happens on the internet in 60 seconds?

168 million sent emails, nearly 700 thousand Google searches, 13 thousand iPhone app downloads, at least 600 YouTube video uploads, and so on. I heard about this from The Daily Mail online, but the graphic came from Go-Globe.com.

And now, time to be sewius

Ever heard of this? The Wonderpets Theme Song. If you're too exhausted from work, trust me this'll make you feel good. This version though is just a song and slideshow with lyrics kind of thing. If you want the full experience, you can purchase an episode or two on iTunes, and get ready to meet Linny, Tuck, and Ming-ming! This is sewius!

WOW - Architecture

The video is very, very well done, but what's more amazing is what it is about -this concept by Herzog and de Meuron (famous architects, e.g. for the Bird's Nest) for a building to be constructed in Tribeca, NYC. Watch it on Vimeo.

Hey You! What Song are you Listening to? NEW YORK

A simple but great idea by Tyler Cullen. Ask everyone in NYC the question, "Hey You! What Song are you Listening to?". I wonder what people's response would be in other cities.

Not so great

Here's another wonderful video. Nice photography showing landscape mountain and astronomic visuals, and a great 90's song in Black Hole Sun. Together though, they feel like ebony and ivory. Watch the video on Vimeo.

WOW (The Prequel)

Remember my last post? It should have been obvious but that Brad Kremer guy has a ton of WOW stuff on his Vimeo channel. Watch this other one called "Hayaku: A Time Lapse Journey Through Japan." It is basically like the previous one - awesome photography (in this case, time lapse photography so it looks more like a video than just simply a photo slideshow) and the most appropriate background music. Talk about harmony = but I'm referring to that of sight and sound. Again. Wow. And did I mention this is in Japan also? Again? Wow, right?

WOW

Watch this video documentary on Vimeo by Brad Kremer of pro photographer Michael Levin's stint in Kyushu, Japan. Gizmodo entitles it "A Visual Study of the Solitude of a Pro Photographer." Watch it in HD if you can. Great combination of visuals and music, as well. Beauty is in the eyes (and ears) of the beholder, people.

"I will hug him and squeeze him and pat him and pet him and call him George."

Remember that line? Reminisce from this video on YouTube. Classic Looney Tunes, indeed! Are you back on this blog post after watching the video? I didn't say it was gonna be there. :-P

Remember the line, "Luke, I am your father?"

Do you really? Watch this one instead on http://youtu.be/CZd_YyFzPD0.

Got sent a suspicious link?

Use ExpandMyURL.com to preview or to lengthen short URLs so you know where you're going with that link, preventing nasty link surprises. But, a tool won't be a useful tool until you know when to use it, or how to use it. The how to use it part just requires a little bit of English know-how, among other things you probably already have. The when to use it part - i.e., when to know if a link is suspicious or not - that's just difficult to teach, you know. I for one have never clicked any spam links. Just be smart. Good luck to you all with that.

More wedding proposal video stuff

Previously I gave you this link on YouTube. Really creative, a lot of effort, it is great.

And now, I just saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj_w0JEpNSo. To top it all off, the wedding comes immediately right after. Over the top?

But anyway, these two are wedding proposals worth sharing to the world. They're really well done. Meanwhile, some people think [this] is astonishing enough. Who would think that.

Order from US Websites and receive them in the Philippines...

...even without a credit card! Johnny Air Cargo provides you with a US shipping address, and then you can shop online (usually with free shipping within the US) or even bid on auction sites such as eBay. You have to pay them a visit at their Manila office if you would like to shop without a credit card. Of course, in addition to your online purchases, you have to pay for the cost of shipping from their NY/NJ office to Manila.

Is it too annoying to follow @inquirerdotnet on Twitter?

Judge for yourself using the followcost.com tool (i.e. find out what it costs to follow someone or something on Twitter). For example, @inquirerdotnet recently has nearly 200 twitter posts per day. In contrast, the more international @cnn only has no more than 7 posts per day recently. I'm unfollowing @inquirerdotnet. ASAP. You?

Guess where from. Duh. It's on YouTube. Yes, they are now streaming movies for a fee, at least in the US, I think. But they do have a selection of free movies assembled in their YouTube Movies page, with categories ranging from Documentary & Biography, Horror, Comedy, Mystery & Suspense, Drama, Action & Adventure, Crime, to... A Rap Song for Japan

Watch this on YouTube, a song for Japan called "Yomigaere!" by Man-San. Not the best rap song though, and probably not the best Japanese pronunciations or whatever, but I read its lyrics touched some Japanese in Japan who were able to listen to it.

Be good in math, ye shall succeed

I read this article from the Official Google Blog, "There’s no place like home for math education." It cites a recent education report that suggested that "understanding math concepts in early school years may be a more important predictor of future achievement than reading skills." You can read that report in [THIS LINK].

Anyways, I've probably experienced this, too, while being in non-English speaking countries. Here, it's the other way around. The actress is Nanako Matsushima (松嶋 菜々子).  This is a Nintendo DS commercial, by the way.

How secure is your password?

You can ask yourself that question in http://howsecureismypassword.net/, a simple but effective tool.  But you might not be confident in typing your password in a not-so-known website, and I am definitely not vouching for this one.  Although the interesting bit about that site is it tells you how long for an ordinary hacker's computer program (i.e. using a simple desktop computer) can crack/decode your password.
